3) Who is A Glimmer of Hope working with?

There are many notable players engaged in poverty alleviation, Income Creation and micro-finance around the world. Jeff Sachs has made much progress on behalf of the United Nations with the Millennium Development programs. Mohammed Yunus and Grameen Bank have been recognized for their progress and impact by way of the Nobel Peace Prize. IDE and Paul Polak recently received a major multi-million dollar grant from the Gates Foundation for micro-irrigation programs and the design of low cost tools.

A Glimmer of Hope made an initial commitment to Income Creation in Ethiopia as part of, and under the auspices of the Clinton Global Initiative. Partnerships and co-investors have emerged in this area, most notably the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation.

Micro-finance is not new in Ethiopia and today there are a number of Ethiopian Micro-Finance Institutions (MFIs) with loan portfolios of $100 million or more plus a number of smaller ones. These MFIs reach and serve the rural poor with small local branch offices in remote communities.

Currently, A Glimmer of Hope works with three major regional MFIs and one NGO in Income Creation

  • DECSI:             Dedebit Credit and Savings in Tigray Region.
  • ASCI:                Amhara Saving and Credit in Amhara Region.
  • OCSSCO:         Oromiya Credit and Savings in Oromiya Region.
  • REST:               Relief Society of Tigray in Tigray Region.
