One Night, Two Villages, 13,000 Lives Improved
It’s hard for us to imagine a world where one out of every six children dies before reaching their fifth birthday. In rural Ethiopia, the fact that 250,000 children die each year from diarrhea is very real. This situation is only worsened by the fact that healthcare is virtually non-existent.
Let There Be Hope - Short film about the life of people in Burbax and Giragie Ethiopia. This video was shot, edited and produced by Paul Pryor.
In hopes of conveying the reality and tragedy of the situation, A Glimmer of Hope hosted a fundraiser: “One Night, One Village, 5,000 Lives Transformed.” Our founder, Donna Berber, was the mastermind behind this one-of-a-kind event that gave Austin a chance to experience what life in a rural African village is really like.
A Lot Can Happen in One Night
A Glimmer of Hope had set out to help over 5,000 people by raising $500,000, but the magnitude and success of the event far surpassed our expectations. In fact, it doubled our expectations. We received contributions totaling $1 million, and were able to transform the lives of nearly 13,000 people in not one, but two villages: Burbax and Giragie.
The event raised enough money to pay for 11 school buildings with separate boys’ and girls’ latrines at each school for improved hygiene and sanitation, a regional health center and health post, and 30 water wells including a deep bore hole in both villages. Also, funding has been provided for microloans for 365 people. All of the projects were completed within 12 months using A Glimmer of Hope’s innovative and effective model of aid and development, and our 100% Promise, where every cent of every donation reaches the projects in Ethiopia.
This event was unlike any other. We showed up as individuals and left as a family. Normally, you go to one of these things to do something for somebody else's cause. For that night, A Glimmer of Hope and these two villages became our cause. Ross Garber
