The community of Lega Tafo is a suburb of the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa. As one would expect, it is very different from a Western suburb. There are a few upper class housing developments for those who want to live outside the urban center of Addis. However, these developments do not show the pulse of the town the way the donkeys and carts and small mud buildings do. Though it is close to the big city, Lega Tafo remains a small rural town in most ways.
In Lega Tafo, the greatest need is educational facilities for the evergrowing number of students in the area. As Addis Ababa expands, more and more people are being displaced to the outskirts, which means there are more children in Lega Tafo. The classrooms that are used by the elementary students are rudimentary buildings constructed with sheet metal. When it is cold, the walls and ceiling become very cold, which chills the students. When it is warm outside, the walls and roof become very hot, making an overcrowded classroom unbearable. These students need real buildings with windows and doors and classroom furniture. More than that, they need the construction of a high school. The village currently has no opportunity for secondary education and students that finish primary school must travel to another village if they want to attend high school. For most, this is not a viable option as travel is expensive and dangerous. The village really needs a high school of its own that will afford the students with a tangible goal and hope of betterment while in primary school.
Only two short years ago, the educational opportunities in Lega Tafo were limited. The primary school was dilapidated and overcrowded and there was no high school at all. Now, only 2 years later, Lega Tafo is a community with fabulous educational opportunities. A new school building has been constructed for the students of Lega Tafo primary school, providing four brand new fully furnished classrooms. When the primary school students graduate, they now have a fabulous high school to attend. The high school began when Glimmer funded the construction of two academic buildings and an administrative building. The local education bureau, inspired by the dedication of Glimmer, decided to add two more academic buildings to the school. As enrollment increased and the community showed their commitment to the school, Glimmer decide to fund and equip a library building and a laboratory building as well as new water points and latrines on the campus. The high school now provides complete 9-12 education with full a full science curriculum. It has been a huge success for the people of Lega Tafo and a great example of what is possible when Glimmer, local bureaus, and the community all collaborate for a common goal.
