Though it is close to the urban center of the country, Karsa is a place that feel so rural it could be a world away. The community here relies entirely on what they can produce on their family farms. In this little village, women and children often spend their days collecting water while the men and boys herd livestock and work the land. It's a hard life for the people here, but they trust each other and work closely together to help each family survive.
The village of Karsa is nestled in a small flat valley, surrounded by tall hills and low mountains. A few miles away, the suburbs of Addis enjoy the benefits of being connected to the city's water supply. However, the people in Karsa do not have this luxury. This small, rural community is incredibly detached from the city's infrastructure and access to water is a major problem. Each day women and children must walk down to the small river that runs through the village to collect dirty water. It is not uncommon to see young children filling their jerry cans with drinking water only a few feet downstream from their livestock who are plodding through the mud and contaminating the water. The situation is dire and these people need access to clean, potable water as soon as possible.
