Pediatric Care for the Children of Tercha

Bethlehem and Meskerem saw their first day light in the Dawro region, southern Ethiopia : on the famous ethiopian highlands seeded with hills and mountain tops reaching 3400 meters altitude. At a short distance of the Great Rift.

This landscape looks like a patch work crafted by its inhabitants and showing the various colors of indigenous wheat, banana and tobacco. In Dawro, there is no industry, no asphalt roads, no phones or any other form of modern civilisation : nature reigns. Paradise you would think ?

Think again: Dawro is also a tough place where only the strongest survive. Here are no doctors, no hospitals, no clean and safe drinking water.

For every child born in Ethiopia, only 6 percent will do so in the attendance of professional medical assistance, and 1 out of 6 children will not reach its 10th birthday.

In rural Ethiopia, most children and their families do not have access to clean and safe drinking water: 1 out of 2 Ethiopians suffer from a water born disease, many children dye of diarrhea.

Mothers gather water from creeks, water that is often contaminated by fecal matter from humans and animals, worms and other infectious diseases. On average, women walk 4 miles to a water place.

Most women will not live to see their 50th birthday, with average life expectancy in Ethiopia standing at 54 years.

Dawro has been tremendously generous to us: she has given us two cheerful, energetic and fabulous daughters. Today, we wish to help Dawro to give their children a safe and healthy future with a pediatric ward at the Tercha Hospital. The pediatric ward will be built in 2013.
