Thanks to an incredible showing of support from new and old friends, we met and surpassed our $500,000 goal for Emergency Relief for Ethiopia! We are incredibly appreciative of everyone who donated and helped spread the word. Be on the lookout for updates about how your donations are helping to alleviate suffering and save lives.

Original campaign message follows:

More than 11 million people in the Horn of Africa lack food and water because of the worst drought in 60 years. When tens of thousands die, especially children, we call this a crisis. All are shocked by this news coming out of East Africa. Most want to help. The question is: Where is the best place to send your money? Glimmer is offering help.  Our Emergency Relief Campaign will help reduce human suffering in the areas affected by the drought, and the Somali refugees in Ethiopia. Glimmer kicked off the campaign with a donation of $100,000, and we are already partnering with a handful of leading international NGOs who have boots on the ground and are providing relief to those that need it most. 100% of all donations given to the Emergency Relief Campaign for Ethiopia will go to our partners to help some of the 4 million Ethiopians facing hunger, and those arriving from Somalia who are in desperate need for food, water, shelter and medical care.

So far, we have already sent a total of $400,000 to the field to help.

We have sent $200,000 to Save the Children and GOAL, an Irish NGO,who are helping in the Dolo Ado refugee camps in Ethiopia on the border with Somalia. The camps are serving 114,000 people with water, food, shelter and medical care. These first funds will specifically target helping children, and provide food and water to those living in Dolo Ado.

What’s Next?

The second phase of Glimmer’s relief efforts is directed at Ethiopians living in remote rural areas in the eastern parts of Ethiopia - to help those in desperate need of food, water and medical care.

Glimmer has sent a further $200,000 to our NGO relief partners operating in Ethiopia, to help vulnerable families and acutely malnourished children living in the hardest-hit, drought-stricken Somali region of Ethiopia.

The first $100,000 has gone to Mercy Corp. These funds will help two mobile health teams in the Somali region for an additional two months to provide vaccinations, medical check-ups and fortified food to pregnant women and children under five.

A further $100,000 was sent to Save the Children to truck water to people and purify water in other hard-hit areas in the southern part of the Somali region of Ethiopia.  It will also provide food to acutely malnourished children, persons living with HIV/AIDS, and displaced people in the same area.

Today thousands of people, mainly children, have already died in East Africa - in Ethiopia, in Kenya and Somalia. Hundreds of thousands are fleeing their homes, walking in extreme conditions in search of food, water, and medical care. Millions of people are at the risk of starvation, and malnutrition. The drought specifically affects Ethiopia in the south and east. The Early Warning System helped to alert and engage aid agencies. The Ethiopian government has appealed for $400 million in aid for food, supplements for mothers and children, as well as health and nutrition, water and sanitation.

We have to let people know what is going on. You can help. Learn how this crisis is putting children and women at risk. And spread the word that together we can save lives.
