School Supplier
Each year, many Central Texas children start school without the supplies they need to do the work. For the Children provides free school supplies to thousands of elementary school students from low income households.
4–H Capital
SPARKS
4-H Capital’s SPARKS program provides extra-curricular educational opportunities in science and technology to children from elementary and middle schools in low-income and limited-resource areas of Austin.
Reading is Fundamental
Family Fun Nights
For children in economically disadvantaged surroundings, learning to read can be difficult. Family Fun Nights is a literacy program that focuses on showing parents how to create print rich environments in their homes.
Reach Out and Read
ROR for Infants in Clinics
Reach Out and Read promotes literacy by bringing books and advice about the importance of reading into the pediatric exam room. Medical staff also give books to children at visits from six months of age to five years.
Communities in Schools
X-Y Zone Male Involvement at Johnston High School; Crocket High School; Lanier High School
One in three Central Texas ninth graders does not go on to graduate from high school. To help young men, aged 13 to 17, stay in school, the X-Y Zone empowers and guides them and helps them to develop leadership skills.
Assistance League of Austin
Operation School Bell
Operated by the Assistance League of Austin, Operation School Bell provides children with enough clothing to be able to wear something fresh to school every day as well as essential school supplies such as backpacks.
Keep Austin Beautiful
Green Teens
To raise environmental awareness among young people, Green Teens utilizes the green space at the Brown, Alamo and Montopolis recreation centers in East Austin to introduce teenagers to the natural environment.
Austin Partners in Education
Tech Corp Program
Austin Partners in Education’s goal is to help students gain the technological and academic skills and the self-confidence they need to become successful learners, while reaching their potential in the community.
Girlstart
Saturday Camps for Girls
There has been a decline in the number of girls, particularly minority girls from disadvantaged backgrounds, in computer programs since the 1980s. To reverse this trend, Girlstart was founded in 1997.
College Forward
East Austin College Prep
Seeking to dramatically improve the college-going rate for low-income students by equalizing access to higher education, College Forward provides the support and assistance needed to apply to college and earn degrees.

Family Learning Nights
The museum believes every child deserves educational opportunities beyond those the schools can offer. It provides some of those opportunities by creating unique learning experiences for children and families.
Jacob Fontaine Museum
After-school History for Youth
Much of what historically made East Austin unique is being lost as fewer older residents are around to pass on the oral history of the area. The Jacob Fontaine Museum is involving young people in preserving that history.
Outreach Productions
Puppet Theaters
Outreach Productions is dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged youth, particularly those living in historically impoverished areas, through creative learning through literature brought to life in puppet shows.
True Light Day Care Center
Technology for Youth
The True Light Day Care Center’s technology program operates all year and remains open on weekends and school holidays. Youth use the center to complete homework, type reports and surf the internet for “child-friendly” activities.
Austin ISD
Widen Early Learning Program
As stay-at-home parents are becoming less common, early learning programs are playing an important role in the education process. The Widen program is helping to overcome a shortage of such programs for minority mothers in Southeast Austin.
World Preparatory
Youth Global Citizen
Young people are growing up in an increasingly global context as new technologies continue to make the world a smaller place. This program helps Austin youth better understand their role as global citizens.
Lasting Legacies
East Austin History
Since segregation ended, much of what made East Austin a unique community has worn away as neighborhoods have blended together. This project actively involves students in the process of becoming local historians.
