It is in operation to turn a profit – a Social Profit.
Social Profit (noun) — The amount of social and humanitarian benefit gained as a result of investing in the well-being of others.
A Glimmer of Hope’s mission is truly a heartfelt one: To help the rural poor of Ethiopia lift themselves out of poverty and offer them a hand up rather than a hand out. Yet it understands the best way to achieve this is to operate entrepreneurially and expect results from its social investments.
A key to this strategy is the foundation’s Country Office in Addis Ababa which is staffed by a team of skilled Ethiopian professionals. Using their intimate knowledge of the country and its challenges, this office carefully selects high-performing, indigenous development organizations to implement the foundation’s projects.
These organizations play an important role in highlighting initiatives that are of the highest priority meaning no funds are ever wasted on unwanted or unnecessary projects. These hand-picked groups are the best in Ethiopia with many of their key staff members having advanced degrees.
A Glimmer of Hope’s Addis-based team examines every detail of each project proposal before financing the partners directly to minimize bureaucracy and paperwork. It also conducts site visits to view the progress and impact of the various projects.
